Sonic the Hedgehog 3

So who here got stuck at the spinner thing at the carnival level?

Azuro | Posted 11/14/2007 12:01:55 AM | message detail
The worst part is they failed to even give you a hint on how to get past it.

I didn't figure out the barrels for quite awhile, but I still got past them. I used the Bubble Shield's bounce jump to get it low enough to pass, but it could take some time. If I lost the Bubble on the way to the barrel, I'd have to press reset and try Carnival Night Zone again. Once I got Hyper Sonic, I used his Dash Attack downward repetedly until I got under the barrel. I've always wondered if anyone else thought of what I did.
That's way past cool!!

I never really got stuck but here's a picture that everybody well get.

When I first played Sonic 3, I was stuck for a good 3 or 4 lives, but eventually got past the barrel of doom by double-jumping with the lightning shield. For years after, I still had to make sure to have that shield to beat the game.

Here is a video of it for those who don't know what we are talking about.

^The funny thing is that you can actually escape "the barrel of doom" if you work at it.

I'm sure anyone who's played the level knows what we're talking about. Good video though.

I figured it out by accident. Like a lot of other people, I thought you had to jump on it. But I had a tendency to press up when I jumped, even though I didn't need to. One time, I pressed up and I either forgot to jump or missed the button or something, and I moved the barrel that way. Figured it out quickly after that.

Longer than that, I think. But I was able to get past it when I was 5 by timing my jumps. Damn, I ran out of time a lot!

*raises hand*

That little barrel must have taken off at least 5 years of my life. Seriously, I blame that stupid barrel for making me the angry, bitter, neurotic man that I am now. Curse you barrel, CURSE YOU!!!!!

Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit. But yeah, its the reason why I would always play Knuckles when I fired up Sonic 3 and Knux when I was a kid even though I though I liked Sonic better. I recall once when I was young I got through that barrel by dumb luck with Sonic and Tails, and I proceeded to beat the game fully. Since then, I used level select to skip that part and I would be able to play as Sonic from Ice Cap Zone in peace. It wasn't until much later that I learned the trick through the Internet and I was able to beat the game again the right way (it also let me beat the game with Tails and see Super Tails).

Currently putting the art in fart.

Wow, I feel a LOT better. I never had a Genesis, so I've only recently started playing this game on the PS2 Sonic collection. I'm playing it through the full version of Sonic 3 and Knuckles, because I figure it's better playing them altogether than separately anyway, and Sonic and Knuckles has a better bonus stage anyway. :)

Anyway, I first hit Carnival Night yesterday, and struggled my way through the zone. This barrel was as far as I managed to get, and yeah, I thought the whole object was to jump up and down. I finally got disgusted with it and turned the PS off, and figured I'd just come here and look up the solution later (that cartoon really made me laugh).
orius | Posted 1/4/2008 2:37:09 PM | message detail
Got through it!

Is is just me or were Ice Cap and Launch Base a hell of a lot easier than Marble Garden and Carnival Night? I blew through those two zones very quickly after getting past the Barrel of Doom. I finally got through to Mushroom Hill and that's great because S&K is one of the very few Genesis games I'm familar with.

Yeah. I got stuck. For a looooooong time. And I eventually got it too by jumping and going under. But, of course, 12 years later (and like 5 years after I beat it as Sonic, stupid barrel gave me hell) I find out I could have just dropped through. *sigh* Oh well, I'll do it next time I play.

OMG I didn't realize this has scarred so many people

This part was horrid. I'd get my friend jumping on it with me as Tails. Or have him Jump on it while I prepared to spin dash under on the side. Nothing would work and the time would run out. Not but a week later I was told how you get past it.

I don't know what year this game came out but I never figured it out as a kid and was only able to get past it once....I just bought sonic mega collection and was playing sonic 3 tonight when I got to that part. after listening to several minutes of me screaming, my girlfriend offered to look it up for me... so, I never really did figure it out :(
so that's like what, 15 years?

my brother and I played together, me as the little sister had to be Tails which I liked, and we worked hard on that part together, often having it take three minutes. then my brother got the level select codes from his friend Christian, and we always started right after Carnival Night Zone just so we didn't have to deal with that stupid barrel. and then when I bought the game for myself (we used to just rent it) my freshman year in college, I decided to look it up on GameFAQs. tragic that I learned that it was so deviously simple

I never really had trouble with that part, I mightve used a game minute figuring out what to do , and the execution would be difficult at times but it was never a big problem. I do not understand how one can get stuck, with simple experimentation I would dub it easily done. Hey up makes you go up? what about left, oh nothing? oh down makes you go down! Y'know that kind of stuff.
Deathscythe810 | Posted 2/6/2008 2:08:55 PM | message detail
I didn't figure it out until 2002, and I had gotten the game back in 94 for Xmas. I would repeatedly jump up and down on it, thinking that's how you'd get it down. I usually ended up playing up to that stage, resetting, putting in stage select, and continuing from Ice Cap.

I was stuck on it as soon as the game came out and only recently, a couple of years ago found out how to get through it properly.

The solution I devised was getting a water shield and a turbo controller - that's how I got through it. Talk about over-thinking a problem. >_>

You have to remember that most of us were very small when we first played this. When this came out GameFAQs wasn't even around for another three years.

I hated that part, they never tell you ANYWHERE that you can manipulate the barrel with the control pad.

I have a friend who didn't even know this until I mentioned it last week...he was like "ASFASFSADA you can DO THAT?! ...well thanks for telling me at least, so I know for my next playthrough."

Sonic 2 has the pit of doom while sonic 3 has the barrel of doom. I was fortunate enough to know someone who knew how to get past that cursed barrel, so I wasn't stuck to long. I still wonder what Sega's big idea was.

The pit of doom? I don't remember any pits of doom that were really freaking hard to get past...

The pit of doom was in Mystic Caves. There was a long drop and you'd land on spikes and eventually die. Annoying if you're Super Sonic because you need to wait for your rings to run out before you can finally die. Still, it compares to the barrel of death as a match compares to a blow torch.

First time I got through was with debug (only time I ever got StH3's debug to work, either).

If I recall, putting debug-mode Sonic in the wrong spot would make you stuck, wether he was in Sonic-form or Item-form (though it's been a decade since I remember).

It took my sister and me a few years to figure out the way you're supposed to do it. I ended up finding out on one of the barrels along the level before the "barrel of doom." Also, I find it amazing to see what some of the posters did to get around that obstacle; it's like intricately piling stuff up so you can climb through a window to get inside your house, because you don't know how to use a doorknob..
