Regarding Chris MacDonald
From: CMacDonald | Posted: 5/19/2004 9:12:57 AM | Message Detail
Fellow FAQ-writers,

It is with much regret that I have to announce the untimely passing of my brother and good friend Chris MacDonald on May 17, 2004.

Chris wrote about 60 FAQs all told under the pseudonum 'Kao Megura' and left quite a legacy in terms of inspiring other FAQ authors to work harder by raising the level of quality in his writings. I'm sure people familiar with his work will recognize the popular "Final Fantasy 7 layout" he invented that so many other FAQ writers adopted. I'm still coming across FAQs myself that have some nice words from the author about how Chris inspired them - there are so many of these. His influence on the FAQ writing community was more widespread than I think anyone could imagine.

Chris always spoke fondly of the GameFAQs community. Not only did he value friendships with other FAQ authors, but the one group he had the most praise for were the contributors. Anyone will agree that you can't have much of a FAQ without contributions from other people, and Chris always took the time, for any contributor, no matter how big or how small the information provided, to credit them fully.

I wish I knew the names of all the contributors he spoke so fondly about, but I sadly do not. What I can say is that to everybody that helped him out, he truly appreciated what you had to offer.

I myself would like to thank the GameFAQs community for providing a place for him to do his very best work.

Friends and acquaintances are welcome to send comments to `cgfm2 at hotmail dot com'.

Regards,

Charles MacDonald

I honestly don't believe that GameFAQs as we know it would exist today without Chris's contributions over the years.

I'd say more, but, for once, I'm at a loss for words. My sincere condolences go out to the MacDonald family.

(And yes, for the more cynical amongst you, Charles's identity is most definitely confirmed in this matter, and he is a well-known and well-respected contributor on both GameFAQs and even more so in the world of emulation.)

It's sad to see him go, despite only speaking with the guy around three/four times in my writing career. His FAQs have
helped me multiple times.

May he rest in piece.

...I wish I knew what to say. Chris was my inspiration for writing FAQs for fighting games in the first place. Polite, cordial and a pleasure to talk to, he will be sorely missed by the community.

I remember the old GameFAQs chat server.. Chris entered the channel, didn't say anything... then out of the blue complimented me on an FAQ which has become my pride and joy. I took that compliment to heart, and I've strived to make sure my FAQs were of the same standard since.

To his family, you have my regards... Chris will not be forgotten.

First off, my sincerest condolences. I wish you and your family and friends strength and comfort during these difficult times.

I remember when I first came to GameFAQs, wanting to contribute to that small world (back then) of people who'd make it their goal to help others. The early Help Section used to link to Chris' page as an example of how to write FAQs. I remember as if it were yesterday.

Browsing through Chris' FAQs. Checking how he did things, how he'd organise FAQs or how he managed to convey everything so clear, concise and most of all complete. I'd return to his CRP many times again, even to this day.

It also never ceased to amaze me how kind he remained. I remember an interview with Chris in which he would talk about his shortcomings. I believe he mentioned he was sometimes too eager to please. That's exactly what I remember about him: he would always be there to help.

Chris was definitely the person who inspired me to write the few little FAQs I have written and without him I wouldn't even have written a single one.

Although I have never met Chris or even seen him, I'll always remember him.

Wow, that was unexpected, so sudden no less...

It's sad to hear he's gone, especially after having correspondence with him on and off over the years. Even when I started FAQ writing, the "it" FAQ at the time was his FF7 FAQs; despite their minor flaws, they're still highly regarded today. As are all his FAQs. It's great to hear he really enjoyed FAQ writing, though.. I just feel bad for him back a few years ago when all the plagiarist/thieving sites brought him down (older users from these parts should remember that 'farewell' page he had on his site back in 2001-ish). He did come back though to what seemed to be a comeback, but now it's over. I guess we'll never know at this point what he would've done, other than knowing a true legend to this site has been put to rest.

RIP.
